Let me start with some bmw 335 coupe info:

The BMW E90 automobile platform is the fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of entry-level luxury/compact executive cars. The car is also available as a station wagon/estate (designated as E91), coupé (E92) and coupé cabriolet (E93). It is the successor to the E46 platform, and was launched in March 2005.

In 2002, Head of Production Norbert Reithofer and Development Chief Burkhard Goeschel halved the standard BMW time it took to reach full production of the E90 from six months to three.

For the US market, the MY 2006 325i and 330i are both powered by the same 3.0 L N52 engine, but the 330i features revised engine software and improved intake and exhaust systems to produce an additional 40 hp (255 vs. 215). MY2007 marks a motor change to increase the power from the motors, therefore a change to the badging of the vehicles. Canada also gets a 323i model which has a detuned 2.5 L gasoline-injected inline-six producing 200 hp (149 kW). The new 335i uses a twin-turbo powerplant, also seen on the 5 series models

The two-door coupé model of the 3-Series became available in August 2006. It is also the first BMW coupé offered with xDrive. All E92s also come standard with Xenon HID headlights and "retractable seatbelt helpers" that extend from the B pillar to hand you the seatbelt when the key fob is in the ignition and the door is closed. Interestingly enough, the coupé is longer and narrower than its E90 counterpart. The E92 comes with 320i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 320d, 325d, 330d, 335d and 330xd models (availability of certain models depends on region; diesels not available to the US market until 2008).

The E30 was sold from 1982 through 1991 in sedan form, through 1993 in convertible form. The E30's introductory price of US$18,210 was nearly double that of the E21 just 7 years earlier, but the availability of a six cylinder engine and 4-door body style (in 1984) earned sales. The torquey "eta" six in the 325e produced 121 hp (90 kW), but met the strict emission standards of the time. The E30 was the most powerful compact BMW offered in the United States since the 2002 Tii.

The 325is was an upgrade from the standard 325i, as some new features were added to the car as standard. One of the most popular models in the BMW X3 ranges will be receiving an enhancement in conjunction with the introduction of a revised engine with Efficient Dynamic technology. The all-new BMW X3 that have the same high quality parts as that of the BMW M3 parts will be powered by a 2.0d 1,995 cc engine that produces 177 hp which is 27 hp more powerful than the previous model. Its torquey power of 350 Nm was also up by 20 Nm.

The enhanced engine output provides the BMW X3 with better performance that accounts for 70 percent of X3 sales in the UK. The X3 2.0d which currently records an 11 percent improvement in terms of fuel consumption obtaining 43.5 mpg on the combined cycle. The vehicle’s CO2 emissions are also remarkably lower by 10 percent from 191 g/km to 172 g/km dropping it into Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty.

If there’s one thing that BMW’s Efficient Dynamics technology can boast of it would be in terms of improvements in economy and emissions without sacrificing driving performance of its vehicles. In addition, sprinting time from 0 to 62 mph was also improved from the previous 10.2 seconds now its only 8.9 seconds while top speed increased from 123 mph to 128 mph.

The X3 2.0d will also be offered with the option of BMW’s Steptronic automatic transmission. The six-speed gearbox is going to be offered for both SE and M Sports variants of the X3 2.0d with a tag price of £1,470.

The introduction of the automatic gearbox to the model may satisfy customer demands but compared to the manual gearbox it has very limited impact on performance figures. The auto-equipped BMW X3 2.0d will still maintain 42.2 mpg on the combined cycle and posts a 178g/km emissions figure.

The other models in the BMW X3 ranges will also received the Efficient Dynamics technology coupled with an enhancement in overall performance. The other two popular models in the range namely the X3 3.0d and 3.0sd will both have improved fuel consumption by 7 percent and 11 percent to 38.2 mpg and 36.2 mpg respectively on the combined cycle.

Harmful CO2 emissions on both models are also to be reduced by 7 percent and 10 percent. Such decline in CO2 emission will ranked the BMW X3 3.0sd with the 2.5i in Vehicle Excise Duty from Band G to Band F resulting to a £95 annual saving.

If you are lucky enough to own a luxury sport utility vehicle, you might have chosen the BMW X5. Families enjoy the comfort, power and safety that comes equipped in every X5. Its all-wheel drive system can take you wherever you need to go in whatever road conditions the weather dishes up. No matter where you drive, be it to school to drop the kids off, shopping, or on long road trips, one feature of your X5 that is sure to get a lot of use is your car's outstanding audio system. An important part of that stereo system is the BMW subwoofer. An X5 subwoofer can make your digital audio files shine.

Speakers in a BMW subwoofer consist of several component parts, including the various drivers and crossovers contained in some type of speaker enclosure. There are usually three types of drivers involved, tweeters to pick up the high register frequencies that produce high-pitched sounds, woofers to take on the low frequencies and their resultant low-pitched sounds, and midrange drivers that excel in delivering all of the sound produced by the midrange signals. Crossovers divide the entire electronic signal recorded on your mp3 or CD into narrower frequencies to which the drivers have been designed to respond, so that you will be able to hear the full range of sound that is on the recorded media.

The X5 subwoofer uses drivers whose specialty is delivering the low end of the sound scale, the bass and sub-bass sounds. You attach a subwoofer to your speaker to improve the low bass's resolution. Some of these sounds are so low that the human ear cannot hear them, but nevertheless humans can actually feel those sounds. You might have noticed this effect the last time you attended a live rock concert with a bassist performing.

These dynamic subwoofers are often installed in the back seat area or trunk of a car, such as your BMW X5. Care needs to be taken when turning the volume up when subwoofers are in action in your vehicle, because hearing loss can result from prolonged exposure at too high a volume.

Some people go for adding tactile transducers to their vehicles as well. When the low bass sounds go down so low that you cannot hear them, you can feel them, and that feeling is sensitized by the use of tactile transducers. They are connected to the seat in the car and the amplifier in the speaker. The sound coming from the driver is carried through the bones of your body and eventually up to your ears.

The BMW E90 automobile platform is the fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of entry-level luxury/compact executive cars. The car is also available as a station wagon/estate (designated as E91), coupé (E92) and coupé cabriolet (E93). It is the successor to the E46 platform, and was launched in March 2005.

E46 comparison

The E90 sedan is 49 mm longer, 78 mm wider and 9 mm taller than its predecessor. The wheelbase is longer by 35 mm. Large amounts of aluminium were used in the body work and suspension in an attempt to keep the weight close to previous models; however the E90 weighs between 50 and 150 lbs more than comparable older models. Modifications include an increased redline to 7,300 rpm, a shortened stroke (by 2 mm), an increased bore (by 1 mm) and a higher compression ratio (11,0:1). The engine is mostly hand built and does not have Valvetronic, decreasing the number of moving parts. Development

Development of the V8 engine began in 1984, and the engine was committed to production in 1986. Some 560 test engines were built throughout the development program.

Design made extensive use of CAD to minimize size and weight. It had a closed-deck cylinder block for maximum rigidity, and used aluminum alloy for both block and cylinder head. Renault Aims to Catch Up With Bmw Sauber

For the past two seasons, Renault was the top team to beat in Formula One. But double world champion Fernando Alonso jumped ship to McLaren Mercedes this season. That fact coupled with a slower car for the 2007 season has been dismal for the team. Although they are in fourth place in the constructors’ championship standings, the team is still looking for ways to improve their cars.

During the past four races, Renault showed an improvement as Giancarlo Fisichella finished fourth at the Monaco Grand Prix and sixth in the French Grand Prix. His teammate Heikki Kovalainen on the other hand finished fourth at the Canadian Grand Prix and fifth in the United States.

Fisichella said that they are now aiming to catch up with third place BMW Sauber. He said that at the British Grand Prix, they will receive good support from the employees of Renault’s Enstone plant. “It is another home race for us after Magny-Cours, with all the people from the factory at Enstone coming to support the team. So of course, a good result for them would be special.”

“But also because we have shown in the last few races that we are closing the gap, and we are in the fight. When you are in a situation like that, you want to be racing every weekend, to try and make that little bit more progress. Our fight will be with BMW Sauber again, and the target has to be to finish ahead of them,” added Fisi.

The Italian Formula One driver said that he likes competing at the Silverstone Circuit where the British Grand Prix will be held. “It's a fantastic track, one of the legendary circuits in Formula 1 and really selective for the cars and the drivers,” noted the Italian driver.

“The fast corners need real commitment, a very good chassis and a stable balance – which we have now with the R27. It is quite bumpy, and physical with a lot of high g-loads around the lap. A good lap at Silverstone is always satisfying, because the car and the driver both need to be working really well to achieve that. I finished fourth in the last two years, so if we could repeat that result, it would be a great performance for us.”

While Fisichella said that they are aiming to overtake BMW in the standings, his teammate Kovalainen said that they are not focusing solely on BMW. The said team fields the F1.07 with engine provided by the Bavarian automaker which also produces BMW E36 parts.

The Finn said that they are also looking to catch up with McLaren and Ferrari. “It's always hard to say before the event but if the trend continues, then they will be the ones we are looking out for,” said Kovalainen referring to McLaren and Ferrari.

“At the moment, it is very difficult to say if we are ahead of them or behind in terms of pure performance, but we are not focusing all our energy on BMW. We have to look beyond them, to McLaren and Ferrari, because we want to beat them too eventually. I know we will get there eventually, and keep on pushing to make sure we do.”

Renault currently has 28 points to its credit after eight races. The team trails BMW by 20 points, Ferrari by 61 and McLaren by 86 points. With nine races left in the 2007 Formula One calendar, Renault needs to make their move immediately.

To be launched in 2010, the next generation BMW 5 Series comes with an entirely new platform as well as a new exterior designs. For a more impressive width, the parts of the tail-lights continue onto the trunk lid.

With an all new Chasis, the sixth generation 5-series has feature similar to double wishbones in the front, like on the new X5. The BMW chasis engineeers said this is to yield better control and road grip around corners. The adaptive shock absorbers is arranged to become more efficient and for the sake of active steering. This is done with the help of the trmendously fast Flex-Ray automotive network communications protocol. The Bavarian auto manufacturer will also be updating its iDrive system with an addition of another couple of programmable buttons.

The sedan is sporty enough. In fact it will come with a V10 motor. That is more power than the 507hp offered in today's edition.

The BMW insider said the auto maker is not closing its doors to the possibility of putting a similar technology as the full-hybrid system with an electric motor while the making of the model is not yet done.

BMW has always had reasons to gloat, it is undoubtedly, one of the leading carmakers when it comes to producing great, and we mean, great, cars.

In fact the latest consumer satisfaction survey has once again revealed that BMW is a winner. And a big one.

The company's X5 sports activity vehicle -- built at BMW Manufacturing Co.'s Greer plant -- the BMW 3 series and the BMW 6 series all topped their categories in the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 APEAL survey.

The BMW 5 series and 7 series were runners up in their categories.

The BMW X5 topped the midsize premium multi-activity vehicle segment. That segment includes SUVs and trucks.

A second-generation SUV, the redesigned X5 was launched last November. The first X5 sold successfully through its last days of production and the new X5, says BMW officials, is also now very popular. The plant produced 3,583 X5s during the week of June 18. The X5 will be joined at the plant by the X6 sports activity coupe, on which production will begin next year, and the X3, which is expected to move production to the Greer location around 2010.

"The APEAL study is important because it's a vote of total confidence in the car," said Bobby Hitt, public relations manager of BMW Manufacturing. "It is very positive for us, for our customer."

BMW routinely does well in the APEAL competition, Hitt added. And its especially a pleasure for BMW employees when that vehicle is validated by customers through sales and awards, he said.

Honda led the pack when it came to vehicles topping the list of customer satisfaction, with four cars – the most of any car brand. Honda's four segment leaders were the Fit (in a tie), CR-V, Ridgeline and Odyssey. Honda was followed by rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz with three each at the top of their categories.

J.D. Power conducts the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study annually. The company surveys consumers who have purchased a new model-year vehicle after 90 days of ownership to measure satisfaction in 100 different attributes, including ride and handling, engine and transmission and comfort and convenience. This year it surveyed about 92,000 new-car owners.

Earlier this year, the auto industry saw the luxury brand Aston Martin being sold by its owner, the Ford Motor Company. The sale took place as Ford is seeking funding for its turn around plan. After the sale of Aston Martin to a consortium of buyers led by David Richards of Team Prodrive, there were talks about whether Ford will sell another brand that it owns under the Premiere Automotive Group. Recently though, a part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group (PAG) is being reported to be taken over by German car company BMW.

Word has it in the auto industry that BMW is interested in buying the biggest brand under the PAG - Volvo. The Swedish brand may be suffering from reduced sales in the United States but it is still one of the most valuable brands that Ford owns. Talks about the possible takeover of BMW at Volvo came after BMW is reported to have requested for a complete breakdown of Volvo’s financial status from a European bank. The said inquiry has raised the issue that BMW may be interested in purchasing Volvo from the struggling company. Experts in the industry agreed that BMW may be looking to expand their offering to consumers.

Another reason for BMW’s interest in Volvo is the reported plan to further expand the MINI brand by sharing Volvo’s platform with the small cars of the MINI brand.

To this issue, online consumers affirmed that they could not see for selling Volvo to BMW. One point raised is the fact that Volvo has been helping Ford and Ford has been helping Volvo since the car maker from Dearborn has acquired the Swedish company. Some consumers pointed out that selling Volvo will not make sense for Ford since even if Volvo is posting reduced sale in the United States, the brand is turning a profit globally. It was also pointed out that Jaguar may be the one that Ford needs to sell although at the brand’s state right now, it is hard to find a company willing to purchase a dying brand. There is an issue with some BMW cars whereby the steering lock mechanism is sticking, this is an electronic function and has affected cars including the 325i M Sport.

The problem arises when you insert the key and get ready to use the push button start, the dashboard is illuminated with a red steering when symbol and the push button start is disabled.

This happened to me several times a day for a few days and in the end I got stuck in Brighton after I stopped at a post office to ask for directions, I came back out got into my car and the malfunction happened. To my horror repeated attempts to start the car failed and in the distance I saw a wheel clamping van attaching a clamp to a vehicle parked just like me.

I opened the door and to my horror I realised that I was indeed parked on a clamping zone and it looked as though the clamp radar had spotted me. I quickly popped my bonnet so as to look as though I was visually on a breakdown but felt the eyes of a truly dedicated clamper burning into me from a distance.

I was late for an important meeting and was already thinking how bad the day was turning out, I had to think fast because I felt vulnerable and knew how clampers just love to immobilise smart sporty cars. I looked furtively from under my bonnet and could see he suddenly sprang into action.

I was horrified, I could see I was going to be the next victim, hurriedly I jumped back into my car, I repeatedly disengaged and re-engaged the key trying to somehow stimulate the electronic push button start but the steering lock mechanism kept firing in. How was I going to explain this at the meeting, thats if I ever got there of course, then I looked up and our eyes met, he had finished and was just sticking his label on the screen of the other car.

In desperation I hopped back out of the car and slammed the bonnet down, sort of feigning that I was ready to go and perhaps he would just drive off. I remembered a nature programme where the Mother bird pretended to be injured to draw the predator away from her nest! If only I had a disabled badge I thought to myself, I saw the van preparing to do a U turn with its lights flashing.

I took my phone out and prepared to make the call cancelling the meeting and also got the BMW rescue me from hell emergency number from the user manual. I could see the look of glee on his face, a self gratifying smirk of satisfaction was spread from one ear to the other and I was at his mercy about to be nailed and become another statistic.

Bloody BMW I thought to myself, why did I ever buy a BMW?

Why did I buy this one?

Why did I not go to the dealer and get them to sort it out when I had the chance?

Why is this happening to me?

Subconsciously I had continued pressing the start and playing with the key then all of a sudden the car started! But to my horror my reflex action in continually pushing the start pushed it again and killed the engine! Argh! Lots of expletives followed, the clamper was parking next to me, taking his time and savouring every moment, he was a connoisseur of the moment, the captive lamb awaiting dispatch.

I waited and composed myself, I crossed everything and gingerly pushed the start one last time, I looked up, this clamper guy had black teeth and big earrings, tattoos and muscles, dirty fingernails and greasy hair.

He gave me a chilling smile and then suddenly it changed, like an executioner falling through thin ice his smile changed to a look of despair. The engine was running, yes! Yes! Yes! You beauty, I love you car I love you BMW! Life is great oh so great, oh yes, clutch in, gear in, 2.5 fuel injected horsepower released and racing, I let the window down all ready gloating, nothing can stop me now!

I stuck my head out ready to give the loser signals to my assailant, the why cant you get a real job, and the just because I have a nice car, lines were running through my head when his deep voice boomed, you alright mate? Just got my jump leads out in case you needed a start, lovely car by the way, I just traded mine in for an M3 always had German cars, just love the engineering!

I stammered, looked sheepish and smiled before saying, thanks for coming over, I thought you had a friendly face, but I think my car is fine now, then I drove off, looking back in my mirror Im sure I could see a look of You got away but I will get you next time sonny!

I reflected on this event after the meeting and realised that owning a nice car can change your perception of other people and situations, it can make you a little arogant and can generate a state of mind where you are convinced everybody is out to get you.

Of course this is not the case... Or is it?

Since 1994, this season for the first time features a single Formula One race held in Germany - and it is entitled the "European Grand Prix" to blow. Nick Heidfeld and the entire BMW team are excited for their home race on the Nurburgring. Robert Kubica is also certain of a good result for the BMW Sauber F1 Team in the Eifel on July 22.

While full on the race is on the schedule in the actual pit lane, fanatics in the BMW Sauber F1 Team Pit Lane Park will have the chance to raise questions to Formula One experts and even try their hand at changing tires as well as refueling. Let us begin now with the fuel injectors. They are in fact linked to the electronic controls and these controls together with a good clean fuel are the two important things you need to look for when pursuing a good and precise work of your fuel injectors.

Fuel injectors are made for both – to make horsepower and to keep the emissions low. In order for this to work a good rapid burn of the fuel is required. That’s why BMW are so successful here. They made a small needle-like valve that forcefully under big pressure injects the fuel into the intake port. The fuel is atomized and like this together with the oxygen in the air it burns instantly and this gives the needed power for your BMW car.

The clean fuel is very important because it will give a longer life for your BMW car and that’s why you need to take really good care of your oil filters. There are usually two types of oil filters - cartridge and spin-on. Sometimes a magnetic system is applied to the filter in order for the ferromagnetic parts to be captured.

Another very important part of your BMW car is the thermostat. This device is capable of both - measuring and regulating the temperature in the car. If it fails your engine may damage because it will most likely overheat. In order to control the temperature the thermostat will constantly measure it and then it will cool down the system or heat it up by switching and controlling the flow of the heat energy.

Now let’s discuss the BMW oxygen sensor. This is a system with a measuring device putted in the exhaust. It is important to know how well the fuel has burned in the engine and this measuring device will provide you with that data. This data will be then examined by the fuel injection computer and it will make the necessary adjustments in order for the better burn of the fuel. These adjustments are all about the way in which the fuel combines with the air and more precisely – the oxygen in that air. This is very important because the better the fuel burns the higher is the performance of your BMW car.

The BMW ignition coil is another amazing thing – it will not fail for very long time and now let’s see why it is so important. In order for your BMW car to start operating it needs a provider of a little spark which will ignite the combined with oxygen fuel. This spark in your BMW car is provided by the spark plugs but they need a high-voltage electrical charge and this will be provided to them by the ignition coil.

The ignition coil is based on induction. It will take power from the accumulator which is 12 volts and then it will transform it to thousands of volts because in order for the spark to be created this high voltage is an indispensability.

The BMW power steering pump on the other hand is the device which will transform the power from the engine into hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure will enable you to easily turn the wheel in the desired direction. Basically the system is driven by the engine which will generate pressure in a rotary-vane pump and the faster your vehicle is going the more pressure is generated. Of course there is also a valve which will relief the system if the pressure goes too high. This valve prevents from damages and also it controls the pressure to be in the necessary values that are still big enough for the system to work properly.

We were talking about some high voltage and now let us discuss for a moment how this high voltage is distributed to for example – your ignition system. If your BMW car is old enough you will see that it uses a BMW distributor cap. This cap is usually plastic and it is used to wire up devices and insure a way for the high voltage to safely pass through. Of course there are many problems that can surely damage your BMW car and for example the first major problem is the water. As you may know the water conducts electricity well enough especially when the voltage of that electricity is high enough. This in our case is really bad because you have to be very careful not to allow any water to go even near the distributor cap.

You will see that with time some cracks begin to occur on every plastic material especially if the temperature of it is changing. If you see cracks on your distributor cap you will need to change it. This is easy and you can do it yourself. However because of these problems with the cap you may want to get a BMW car with DIS or distributorless ignition systems. The only problem there will be that they are a bit more complicated and you will most likely be unable to change it yourself if you are not an expert.

Now let’s dive in some mechanics. Vibrations when big enough can cause some problems with your BMW car and will surely make you feel not at ease. To prevent this your BMW car is equipped with coil springs which in fact are known to be the reason for the good suspension of the BMW cars but in fact it is not the only reason.

The coil springs are controlled by the BMW shocks and the precise tuning of these shocks is the very thing that will provide the best suspension. This is why the tuning for every particular vehicle is a must and BMW defiantly knows that and perhaps this is why they are known well for their good suspension. Bmw Sauber Faces Weather Challenge

BMW Sauber has so far fended off the challenge of defending world champion Renault. But these two Formula One teams are not fighting for the top spot, in fact, the two teams are battling for third place and BMW currently occupies that spot.

Renault though has shown resurgence prior to the French and British Grands Prix. BMW Sauber’s duo of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld though managed to upstage Renault’s duo of Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen at the said two races. Thus going into the European Grand Prix, BMW Sauber sits comfortably in third place.

Although in third, BMW is far from catching frontrunners McLaren Mercedes and Scuderia Ferrari. The two teams have the monopoly on wins this season. McLaren has four wins - two from Fernando Alonso and two from Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari, on the other hand, has five wins; Kimi Raikkonen has three while Felipe Massa has two. In comparison, BMW Sauber only has a single podium finish this season courtesy of Heidfeld at the Canadian Grand Prix.

On Friday, Heidfeld and Kubica participated in the free practice session which has gone well for both drivers. The only problem that they have is the weather. Due to rain showers, the team has to anticipate when to change tires.

During the practice sessions, BMW Sauber had a taste of what Sunday would be like if it rains. Kubica said that they had a good run but the weather was something else. “The day was quite okay but the weather was so so,” said the Polish Formula One driver in an interview after the practice sessions.

“The track was a bit wet for the first half an hour of the afternoon session, but then it dried. We did tire evaluation in the morning and then in the afternoon worked on the set-up, mainly doing research to get the right balance of the car as it is a big change from the last two races,” Kubica continued.

Heidfeld is currently fifth in the drivers’ championship standings and is now looking for a good performance to give their team a better chance of catching up to McLaren and Ferrari. The German Formula One driver is in agreement with Kubica in saying that they had a good day of driving.

“Our Friday went well, even better than expected before the weekend,” pointed out the 30-year old Heidfeld. The German also bemoans the effect of the weather on their chances to a good race. “In the first session especially we were strong. In the second session the balance of my car wasn’t as good, although we didn’t change a lot. It was down to the track conditions – the rain had washed the rubber away and the wind had changed direction.”

The German though is still upbeat with their performance on both practice runs. “But as usual the second practice session never really demonstrates our true performance. I think we have a good basis to work from,” concluded Heidfeld.

Meanwhile, in other BMW news, the name is now being used for exactly 90 years (July 21, 2007). It was in 1917 that the name BMW was first used by the Bavarian automaker. On July 23, 1917, the automaker issued a letter informing everyone that a new force in the auto industry has emerged. The letter said: “May we respectfully inform you that, with effect from this day, we have changed our company name to Bayerische Motoren Werke.”

Bmw's 5-series Has New Names, Much Better Performance

BMW has changed the name of its six-cylinder powered midsize, luxury 5-Series cars for 2008 to emphasize its larger and more powerful engines. The old 525i would be change to 528i with 230hp while the 530i becomes the 535i with 300 hp included on the twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder 535xi Sports Wagon.

The German automaker and producer of high quality BMW 325 parts has also updated the interiors of its 2008 5-Series sedans and wagons with the addition of an optional Lane Departure Warning system that softly vibrates the steering wheel whenever it detects that the driver is wandering out of his or her lane. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the 5-Series including destination charge will start at $45,075 for the base 528i.

BMW has also assured that buyers of the 5-Series sedan will love the image that the four-door car conveys. The 2008 5-Series styling and design reflects its performance heritage, a good bit of technology but not lightweight. It is also worth mentioning that would-be BMW 5-Series owners will receive four years/50,000 miles of free maintenance that would include scheduled oil changes and even replacement if worn out windshield wiper blades. This is in addition to the four-year/50,000-mile limited, bumper-to-bumper warranty.

It is also hard to miss out the new found power in the 2008 BMWs. The test 535xi weighs in at nearly 4,000 pounds which means that this particular BMW will not feel lightweight or flighty. Its peak torque is at 300 pounds-feet and can come as low as 1,400 rpm and can reach up to 5,000 rpm which is quite satisfying for any kind of driving.

The 3-liter, twin-turbocharged, inline six-cylinder with variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust functions are similar to the one equipped on the BMW 335i. It was mated in the test 535xi to an updated Steptronic automatic transmission that could be shifter manually. For the 536xi, BMW has removed the confusing and difficult-to-operate Sequential Manual Gearbox.

The power is also increased to its highest ever in the base 528i which has a 3-liter, inline six-cylinder with variable valve timing without the turbocharging. The top range 550i sedan retains its 360-hp, 4.8 liter V8.

Fuel economy is not a highly flaunted characteristic of BMW’s vehicles but for the test 535xi, it was able to perform within the government’s ratings of 17 mpg for city driving and 25 mpg for highway driving. The handling as expected of a BMW was remarkable. The car body was steady and well-controlled in all maneuvers even over some busy road surfaces.

BMW will introduce a modern and authentic performance coupe with enhanced BMW parts and combined sporty rear-wheel-drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines and seating for four – all reinventing its iconic 2002 models of some 4 decades ago. The new 1 Series Coupe will be available in 128i, 135i, 123d and 120d.

The 128i will feature Valvetronic valvetrain management and aluminum/magnesium contruction — core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics. It will be powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline 6-cyinder engine with 200 lb-ft of torque.

The powerful 135i features BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower (225 kW) and an amazing 300 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm. Optimum performance and economy is achieved with no loss in engine response with its direct piezo gasoline injectors, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooling. Acceleration is from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) and accomplished in 5.3 seconds with top speed which is electronically limited to 255 km/h (155 mph).

The new 123d has a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with Variable Twin Turbo and Common-Rail technology. A power of 200 hp (150 kW) is provided by the all-alloy engine.

The new coupe encompassed with very masculine looks intended for sporting. The greenhouse with its “Hofmeister kink” is moved rearward and offers a particularly purposeful look because of the long hood. The coupe also features short overhangs, long wheelbase and large frameless doors on a body with a striking shoulder. An M Aerodynamic Kit is standard on the 135i.

Two upholstery options are the sporty and comfortable Leatherette and the rich Boston Leather. Map pockets are integrated in the lower part of the doors. Sports buckets seats are part of the optional Sport Package.

Sophisticated suspension system includes an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel. The new coupe also has BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function.

Also available as an option is an Active Steering.

Safety equipments include six airbags as standard and crash-optimized seats with specially padded headrests and backrests.

Other features are the three-point inertia-reel seat belts all within the seats of the 1 Series Coupe and the rear seats come with standard LATCH attachments for child seats.

Having a code name “E87”, the BMW 1 Series is a small-luxury car but can be considered a small family car. The 1 Series is the only vehicle in its class that features a longitudinally-mounted engine and a rear-wheel drive.

Safe Parking Using the Bmw Remote Park Assist

After revealing the prototype system at the BMW Innovations Day in Munich last month, the German automobile maker had announced the release of their innovative safe parking technology called BMW Remote Park Assist. By August 2006, BMW owners will be able to park their BMW cars by using a remote control. This feature would also be able to increase the car's child safety features.

The BMW Remote Park Assist allows BMW drivers to stand beside their car while it parks itself in the garage. BMW cars can be reversed or locked in place from its parking position using the driver monitoring pedestrian traffic. With this, the risk of reversing and bumping into children is reduced.

Vehicle guidance is being controlled by pressing a button on the remote key and the car moves at 2.5 km/hour. Smart sensors control the movement and these are assisted by a special mirror mounted in the garage. The sensors detect hurdles and prevent the car from hitting them, thus reducing the damage on BMW auto parts. When the button on the remote key is released, the car will stop moving.

Raymond Freymann, Head of Research and Technology of BMW Group, further explains how the BMW Remote Park Assist works: "The fully automatic garage parking assistant is a vehicle system which enables a vehicle to drive into a garage fully automatically. In order to enable this, we of course have to know where the vehicle is positioned relative to the garage. To this end, there is a camera mounted on the windscreen pointing ahead at the garage. On the back wall of the garage we attach a so-called "lenticular reflector". This lenticular reflector gives us two pieces of information: firstly the distance of the vehicle from the back wall. If the camera sees the reflector in small size, this means it is a long way. If the camera sees the reflector in large size, this simply means that the vehicle is near the wall. Secondly you have a very clear view of the angle at which the camera is pointing at the reflector since there is a black line moving backwards and forwards. So you have two pieces of information - the size of the reflector and the angle relative to the back wall. Now the position of the vehicle is known and I can define the trajectories for the vehicle to move completely automatically into the garage. This is essentially the sensor system we have installed for the Automatic Park Assistant. Of course, what else do I need to control the whole operation? It has to be possible to control the engine and transmission electronically, I have to be able to operate the brake electronically from the vehicle and of course the accelerator too. But that's all the systems I need so as to be able to have the vehicle drive into the garage completely automatically."

BMW said that their innovative BMW Remote Park Assist system is ideal for restricted parking areas like apartment buildings and town houses.

BMW recently launched its new performance driving campaign that features offbeat characters from driving lessons past. The campaign, launched for the BMW Performance Driving School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, aims to bring the goals of the school to life by posing the query: "Who taught you to drive?"
BMW of North America will encourage drivers to consider how times have changed since their first lesson, and who taught them. Through non-branded micro-site and viral videos, BMW of North America in cooperation with Austin-based GSD&M, a leading marketing and communications company, tackled more than just what car to drive as it launches the "Relearn to Drive" campaign.

The campaign will take visitors to www.RelearnToDrive.com, zeroing in on the idea that much of what drivers originally learned was incorrect or no longer applies, and the BMW Performance Driving School is the place to correct those wrongs.

"Many drivers on the road today have not considered just how times -- and cars -- have changed since they learned to drive, and this campaign will serve as an entertaining wake-up call that perhaps we could all stand to learn something new," said Jack Pitney, Vice President, Marketing, BMW of North America. "Increasing awareness of the programs we offer at the BMW Performance Driving School will let people know there is a fun way to hone those skills we all may have to use one day, no matter what kind of car they drive."

The campaign appears in select auto and lifestyle publications, such as Roundel, Autoweek and Road and Track. It will also be published online via AutoWeek.com and RacingSchools.com. YouTube and Google Video will also feature the campaign. What’s more, it will be printed on postcards distributed at BMW events nationwide this summer. The "Relearn to Drive" website features videos of nine unconventional, panicky characters that capture the multitude of ways individuals may have been taught to drive. They include the following:

The German automaker is famed for the manufacture of trusted BMW M5 parts and other auto accessories and equipment. "BMW's commitment to great ideas goes beyond engineering the best automobiles - they're dedicated to improving the entire driving experience," said John McGrath, vice president of Communications for GSD&M. "This interactive campaign is a humorous look at how most of us got started behind the wheel and highlights the opportunity to relearn those skills and upgrade the pleasure of driving."

The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness of the BMW Performance Center and BMW Performance Driving School - a 134-acre, high-tech driving facility set with closed courses, skid pad, water walls, and an off-road course. Bmw to Offer Twin Turbo 1-series in the US by 2008 (Ezine Ready)

BMW officials have confirmed to Winding Road at a corporate event this week that the 1-series will be making its way to the US shores in 2008. Although there are some official company statements released saying that the 1-series is due for the US market in two years a source within BMW’s company however said that is an overstatement and confirmed that the 1-series will be announced for the US market before the end of 2007. Sales of the 1-series is expected to start early in 2008.

And that is not the best news yet---the 1-series that will debut at the US market will possess BMW’s fabulous new twin-turbo, 3.0 liter inline-6. This is the same engine found in the new BMW 335i coupe and convertible that features the piezo direct injection and delivers significantly more thrust than its official 300hp rating suggests. The 1-series has also lighter weight; its powerful hatch should be able to beat the 335i’s sprint to 62mph by 5.1 seconds. Its performance is comparable to that of the previous M3. Also coming to the US market is BMW’s newest naturally aspirated 3.0 liter inline-6.

The 1-series cars that would debut at the US market will be two-door versions only. This means that the US market will miss out on the five-door version. But BMW has made it clear that additional models will be added later on but they would like first to get a quick read on the viability of the car’s acceptance in the US before they deploy other models. The 135i and 130i will also be launch in two-door hatchback forms and soon probably a two-door convertible and sedan with a proper trunk will also be offered but of course this is something for BMW to decide on.

Prices for the 1-series hasn’t been finalized but expect the car to cost somewhere between the BMW 3-series and MINI.

To grab the attention of the fanatics, Z4 coupe is given a sloping, double-bubble roof that tapers to the rear like a droplet. The front suspension of Z4 is also made different from its ancestor. Among the compact sports cars, the BMW Z4, Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster stand out. But which is you? And why did BMW and Porsche wait so long before making the coupes? There is no Boxster coupe, but the Cayman is almost the same thing - but uprated.

It might seem odd that the two German companies, well-known for high-performance and sporty cars, waited to announce their coupes at the same time. The answer lies in why they introduced the roadsters in the first place.

Porsche wanted a new, smaller model to increase its market coverage. Not everyone likes the 911, and not everyone wants a coupe. So it made sense to opt for the mid-engine layout - the 911 is rear-engined - and the better balance that gives in designing the Boxster. At the same time, the addition of an open-top roadster would also increase sales. And both tricks worked.

But what about BMW? Well, BMW wanted to build cars in the USA, and did not want to build the same cars it built in Germany as that would increase costs. So it decided to build a roadster for the US market, although it would be marketed elsewhere.

At that time there was more potential volume for a boulevard cruiser type of two-seater than an out-and-out sports car in the USA, so the BMW Z3 was born. It was a rather tall car for a sports car, and although a hardtop was offered, it looked odd, making the car look even taller than it was.

Z4 more sporty than Z3

The BMW Z3 did not really catch on in Europe, so the Z4 was designed as a more sporty car than the Z3, and with its 3-liter engine which develops 265 bhp, is a good match in performance for the Porsche Boxster. Meanwhile, Porsche decided to fill out its range with an extra model, to be priced between the Boxster and the 911. In fact, the Cayman is based on the Boxster, but has more sporty suspension, and has a larger engine. Now, though you can get a Cayman with a 2.7 liter engine as well as the 3.4 liter job. The Boxster gets 2.7 and 3.2 liters.

Because Porsche makes flat-six engines, it can easily produce engines of different capacities from 2.7 to 3.8 liters, and many parts are common to all of them.

If you are looking for a sporty car, then you will want to look at the Z4 3-liter, which produces 265 bhp, and reaches 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, a time matched by the Boxster 3.2. The Cayman is a fraction quicker, getting to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Mind, if you want maximum performance from these cars, you can get the BMW Z4 M, with over 300 bhp on tap.

Choosing between Z4 and Cayman

But when it comes to the choice between the Z4 and Cayman coupes,you will be influenced by which one looks better. Although the Z4 looks a lot better than the Z3 it does have a few quirky lines, which don't appeal to everyone, and the coupe is no better.

The Cayman has the usually slick Porsche lines, with a long tail and built-in spoiler which looks pretty good. On the road performance is not much different, and both have super engines and gearboxes, but they don't do things in quite the same way. The Cayman is a beautifully balanced car that can be driven fast with confidence, but if you want to hang the tail out, the Z4 might be more to your liking.

Both are great sports cars, and will give you a lot of fun. What else should you consider? Nissan's 350Z is also quite a car, with a lusty V-6, the Mercedes-Benz 350 SLK 350 and new Audi TT are also worth looking at.

Precise directional stability and assured steering movements maximize roadholding and take the strain off the driver. And reliable steering feedback also enhances driving pleasure at high speeds.”

With the company focusing on Formula One racing technologies, it comes as no surprise that their cars equipped with BMW fuel injectors should also have advanced technologies. BMW Group Canada has announced that the BMW 1 Series Coupe will debut in Canada in 2008. The latest variant in the 1 Series is designed to sport striking styling cues and auto parts to make it the ultimate temptress for 2008.

The new BMW 128i and 135i Coupes will enter the premium compact segment in Canada. The BMW 128i Coupe will be powered by the Bavarian automaker’s latest generation 3.0-liter inline 6-cyinder Valvetronic engine producing 230 horsepower and 200 pound feet of torque. The lightweight magnesium/aluminum engine is designed to provide the BMW 128i Coupe with scintillating performance without uncompromising unmatched levels of fuel economy.

Meanwhile, the BMW 135i Coupe will sport a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with high-precision injection, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooler. The Coupes’ car parts are upgraded to produce better output compared with BMW E46 parts.

The Coupe also gets an iDrive control system like its larger siblings. This gives the driver control over secondary and comfort functions like communication, air conditioning, entertainment and navigation in one place. The latest version of iDrive, optional on the BMW 1 Series Coupe, is equipped with six Programmable Memory Keys and touch-sensitive sensors. Keeping pace with modern audio and communication technology, the 1 Series Coupe is equipped with BMW Assist with Bluetooth Wireless Technology. For simple and straightforward connection of an MP3 player, an Auxiliary input jack is also standard, and a USB port for direct control of an Apple iPod or other MP3 player is available as an option.

The 1 Series Coupe gets more enticing rear end styling than the hatchback variant, which was introduced in 2004. The 135i Coupe offers breath-taking performance and a more arresting aura. Features include an Aero kit for extra downforce at speed, better brake cooling and improved aesthetics while the sports suspension delivers higher traction and decreased body roll with 18-inch wheels and performance tyres. The sports suspension is mated to a high-performance brake system incorporating six-piston fixed calipers on the front and two-piston fixed calipers at the rear.

Safety-wise, the Coupe features six airbags, Head Protection System (HPS), crash-optimized seats with specially padded headrests and backrests, and LATCH attachments for child seats as standard features.

The new model goes into production later this year and will be available with a range of gasoline and diesel engines. BMW said the new car will reinvent the niche that its 2002 model created in the mid-1960s. Canadian availability is expected in the first half of 2008. Detailed specifications and pricing will be announced prior to the market launch.

E46 comparison
The E90 sedan is 49 mm longer, 78 mm wider and 9 mm taller than the E46 equivalent. The wheelbase is longer by 35 mm. Despite the increased dimensions, the E90 is lighter than the E46, which can be attributed to the use of lighter materials in construction. Large amounts of aluminium were used in the body work, and the engine block is made of aluminium and magnesium. The piston sleeves still use steel.

The E90 also introduced run flat tires to the 3 Series range. Consequently, cars with run-flats are not equipped with a spare tire.

Special Edition
The 320si is a special homologation version, built in order to qualify the car for the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).[1], released in 2006 and limited to 2,600 units. The 320si uses a modified 4 cylinder engine (N45) different to that in the standard 320i (N46). Modifications include an increased redline to 7,300 rpm, a shortened stroke (by 2 mm), an increased bore (1 mm) and higher compression ratio (11,0:1) over that of the standard 320i engine. The engine is mostly hand built and does not have Valvetronic, decreasing the number of moving parts. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) is in 8.1 seconds and acceleration in fouth gear from 80 to 120 km/h is in 7.7 seconds compared with a standard 320i which achieves 9.0 and 9.1 seconds respectively. Fourth gear acceleration is comparable to that of the 325i which achieves the 80 to 120 km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds.

Opinion

Since its launch the 3 Series saloon had been hugely praised by the majority of motoring press and is cited as easily the best car in BMW's current generation saloon line up, which began with the E65 7 Series in 2001. The only real area in which the car has attracted criticism is the exterior styling. Otherwise, the 3 Series has been praised for its class handling and steering, the ride (which is the bane of the E60/E61 BMW 5 Series and E65/E66 BMW 7 Series models), engines, refinement, cabin space (which was once a previous 3 Series achiles heel) and Audi A4-rivalling interior quality.[original research?]

The car has so few and minor weaknesses that some journalist proclaim the 3 Series as, objectively in terms of the class its in and against its competitors, the most complete car on sale and easily the best car in its class. Furthermore, with the rival W204 Mercedes Benz C-Class already coming 2nd best against the 3 Series in some comparisons, and based on the track record of other competitors, it is conceivable that the E90 may remain the best car its class until it is replaced.

Awards

In April 2006, the E90 was awarded the World Car of the Year title by a jury of 46 international automotive journalists. The car was praised for its balance between performance and practicality, as well as between style and seriousness. The jury also praised the new diesel engines and the all wheel drive variants.^[2]
Car and Driver magazine listed the E90 3-series on their Ten Best list for the 16th time in 24 years of the list's publication.
The E90 was named "Best New Sports Sedan" in the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year awards.

The E30 automobile platform was the basis for the 1982 through 1991 BMW 3 Series entry-level luxury car / compact executive car. It was the successor of the BMW E21 in 1982 and was replaced by the BMW E36 in 1992. BMW continued to produce the cabriolet (convertible) E30 well into 1993. The M3 cabriolet was never officially offered for sale in North America; it was offered only for the European market.

The famous BMW M3 was first introduced on the E30 platform. A widened version of the E30 front suspension and the drivetrain from the E30 325i were used in the BMW Z1 roadster.

The E30 3-Series was produced in four body styles, a four door saloon, a two door coach, a five door estate (marketed as the "touring"), and a two door convertible. A Baur cabrio was also available. The 325ix was produced from 1988 to 1992, and featured all-wheel drive. It was available as a two-door (coach) or a four-door (sedan). The BMW M3 utilised a widened and heavily redesigned and restyled variation of the 2 door body style. The M3 shares few parts with other E30 models.

The primary distinctive feature of the BMW E30 models produced for the North American market in 1984-1987 are the elongated front/rear anodized aluminum bumpers. These bumpers are commonly known as "diving boards." In 1988, the anodized aluminum bumpers were shortened by revising the cover/fillers and shortening the shocks. In 1989 the anodized aluminum bumpers were finally replaced with shorter body-color plastic bumpers. The later model plastic bumper can fit onto a 1988 E30 without any modifications. This is not the case with E30s older than 88. The original chrome bumpers can be tucked in by draining the bumper shocks and compressing them to shorten the bumper. This, however, in the event of a collision, removes the ability of the shocks to absorb impacts and transfers the force directly to the chassis, which is more likely to cause serious damage even in low-speed scenarios.

The cars were powered by a range of inline 4 cylinder (BMW M10 , BMW M40 , & BMW M42) and inline 6 cylinder (BMW M20 and BMW M21) engines, with both petrol and diesel power. Power output for the engines ranges from 140 N·m (103 lbf·ft) torque for the 1.8 L (1766 cc) 4 cylinder engine, to 230 N·m (170 lbf·ft) torque from the 2.7 L (2693 cc) 6 cylinder petrol engine. The E30 BMW M3 was fitted with a 4 cylinder engine (BMW S14) producing more power, but less torque.

Engines

Following on from the E21 the E30 was fitted with M10 4cyl and M20 straight six engines. The 316 used a 1766 cc M10 fed by a carburettor and producing only 66 kW but this allowed BMW to offer a cheap entry level car in the range. The 318i used the same M10 but with Jetronic injection, pushing power to 77 kW/103 hp and improving economy. Finally the 320i (2.0 M20 with 92 kW/125 hp) and 323i (2.3 M20 with 111 kW/139 hp) completed the range.

Later a 2.5 version of the M20 boosted the power of the top model to 120 kW/168 hp.

In 1988 the E30 was revised. The revision contained two significant changes in the engine department. First the M20 straight six motors changed from Bosch Jetronic to Bosch Motronic, this boosted the 320i to 95 kW and the 325i to 126 kW/172 hp, all the while improving the economy, especially on the 320i. The M10 was replaced by the new belt-driven cam M40 which also incorporated Motronic injection. The new 318i now had 85 kW/114 hp and was noticeably smoother than the old 77 kW/103 hp version. The 316 was replaced by a 316i, which used a 1600 version of the M40 producing 75 kW/100 hp. Not quite as torquey as the 66 kW/88 hp 1800 M10 it replaced, it nevertheless offered superior performance. In some markets, like South Africa, the old M10 powered 316 continued a lot longer, gaining the new bumpers of the other models. In South Africa fans had to wait till 1991 for the 316 to make way for the 316i.

Special models:

In addition to the famous M3 there were other special models of the E30. BMW South Africa's Motorsport division created the 333i in 1986 by fitting the 3.3 L M30 "big six" of the 733i to a 2-door E30. The resulting 333i was a major success in saloon car racing in that country and is now a collectors item. These cars, built with help from Alpina in Austria, featured some interesting compromises like forcing the buyer to choose between air conditioning (vital in South Africa) or power steering. They were only built in small numbers in 1986. Later when it became clear that South Africa would not be getting the M3, the 325iS was created. Initially this was merely a 325i 2-door fitted with a bodykit and a close-ratio gearbox (improving acceleration at the expense of top speed and economy) but more changes where made to keep the car competitive in South African saloon car racing. Nevertheless, these cars were always sold to the public. This culminated in the 325iS Evo II of late 1991. By now several body panels were made of aluminum, preventing the car from being washed by automated car washes, and the M20 engine grew to 2.7 L and now produced 155 kw (210 hp).

The cabriolet version continued to be available to the end of 1993.

BMW E21 is the platform designation for the first BMW 3 Series compact executive car, produced by the German automaker BMW from 1975 to 1983. This series was the immediate successor to the BMW 2002 and was superseded by the BMW E30 platform.

Development and early history

Under the direction of its 51% percent shareholder, Herbert Quandt, BMW decided upon a replacement for their aging 2002. Without it, there was the distinct possibility of BMW leaving its core mission of building driver oriented cars, and alienating an existing customer base long enamored with the company's 2002 model.

Paul Bracq, Director of Design at BMW from 1970 - 1974, is credited with setting the design direction of the E21 3 Series, while Wilhelm Hofmeister is credited with first drawing the small forward wedge at the base of the C-pillar, a strong design trait of the first 3 Series.

In July 1975, BMW’s Board of Management first presented this new model series in the Munich Olympic Stadium for public appraisal. The frontal view of the new car was dominated by the BMW trademark kidney grille standing out clearly from the radiator cover. The styling of the new car bore a resemblance to the BMW E12 5 Series.

The wedge shape of the two-door model was distinctive, extending all the way to the unusually high rear end. In response to criticism of the tail design, a black plastic trim panel between the tail lights was added. The car's styling was otherwise well received.

Measuring 4355 millimeters (171.5 inches) in length, 1610 millimeters (63.4 inches) in width, and 1380 millimeters (54.3 inches) in height, the E21 Series continued the tradition of the New Class. With the wheelbase measuring 2563 millimeters (100.9 in), there was little body overhang in the rear wheel drive design. The track measured 1364 millimeters (53.7 in) at the front, and 1377 millimeters (54.2 in) at the rear.

The suspension incorporated rack and pinion steering and McPherson strut suspension at the front, and semi-trailing arm type independent suspension at the rear. The power assisted brakes were discs on the front wheels, while the rear wheels had drum brakes.

Initially, a Getrag four-speed manual was the standard transmission fitment. Five-speed Getrag gearboxes were fitted as standard in the 323i and others in later years, but were available at the car's release as an option, with gear ratio sets favoring either performance or economy. Alternatively, purchasers could opt for the ZF 3 HP-22 three-speed automatic transmission.

The cockpit design of the E21 marked the introduction of a new design concept, with the center console angled towards the driver. This feature become part of BMW’s interior design philosophy for many years. As a sign of passive safety, all edges and control elements within the interior were rounded off and padded.

At the E21's release, three models were available: with 316 (1.6 litre), 318 (1.8 litre) and 320 (2.0 litre) versions of the BMW M10 four cylinder engine. To draw clear visual distinction within the new model series, the 320 models came with dual headlights, while the 316 and 318 had single round headlights.

At the end of 1975, the 320i was introduced; the engine was fitted with Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection, delivering 125 BHP on premium grade gasoline.

At introduction in the German market, the entry-level 316 retailed at DM 13 600, the 318 sold for DM 14 420, and the two 2.0-litre models went for DM 15 330 and DM 17 400 respectively.

Ongoing evolution

In the mid 1970s, BMW had invested DM 110 million in a new engine series, designated as the M20.

At the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW unveiled its new variants of the E21, featuring the new six-cylinder M20 engines. The four cylinder 320 model was replaced with the 320/6, featuring a two litre version of the M20 engine. The 323i model was introduced, featuring 2.3 litres and 143 BHP, empowering this car with a top speed of approximately 190 km/h (118 MPH). The braking system was also upgraded, with the 323i featuring disc brakes on all wheels.

In the meantime however, a performance gap had developed between the 98 BHP 318i and the new 320/6 delivering 122 BHP. For the 1979/80 model year, the four-cylinder models were upgraded: the 1.8 litre power unit was revised and entered the market as a 90 BHP carburetor engine in the 316, while addition of Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection to the 1.8 litre engine raised the 318i to 105 BHP.

Since there was now also room for a new entry-level model, the 315i powered by a 75 BHP 1.6 litre M10 engine made its appearance in 1981.

315: The most economical model, introduced to the market in reaction to the second "oil crisis" in late 1979, with a 4-cylinder M10 1.6 L engine and a single downdraft carburetor, 75 BHP. More spartan than the other E21 models, it was the last E21 to be built and shared production with the E30.

The E34 M5 is a continuation of BMW's M5 series of sports sedans, based on the 5-series. It was produced from 1989 to 1995, although sales in North America started in 1991 and ended in 1993. It was produced at BMW M GmbH in Garching, Germany and like the previous M5, was entirely hand-built. It utilized the 535i chassis which was produced at BMW's Dingolfing plant. Assembly was done either by a single M employee or a team of M employees and generally took about two weeks. It is rumored that the test drivers of the E34 M5 could determine who or what team made each specific M5, due to characteristic quirks of the handbuilt nature of the E34 M5. The engines were also built by hand by BMW M technicians. All of the E34 M5 powerplants were built to 5% of advertised output.

Overview

The early E34 M5 used an evolution of the 24-valve I6 found in the E28 M5 and E24 M635CSi/M6. Designated S38B36, the engine technically remains a 3.5 L, with a bore of 93.4 mm and stroke of 86 mm for a total capacity of 3535 cc. The added stroke is due to a new forged steel crankshaft, though the camshafts were also changed. Compression was up slightly (10:1 versus 9.8:1). Other adjustments made included an electronically controlled butterfly valve in the intake plenum which provided better low rpm and mid-range power. The engine also featured an improved flywheel, Bosch Motronic fuel injection, equal length stainless steel headers and three way ceramic catalysts.

The E34 M5 had a highly-tuned I6 engine called the S38B36. Originally it had a displacement of 3.6 L and produced 315 hp (235 kW) at 6900 rpm, and 266 ft·lbf (361 N·m) at 4750 rpm. Cars sold in North America and Switzerland which, due to a different catalytic converter, produced 310 hp (229 kW) and 265 ft·lbf (359 N·m).

In 1992, the engine displacement was increased to 3.8 L with the S38B38, except in North America, which continued with the 3.6 L engine. Power was now increased to 340 PS (335 hp/250 kW). Also in 1992, a Touring version was introduced in LHD form only.

The M5 came with an unusual wheel design. From 1988-1992 the M5 featured the M-System wheels. These wheels were 8x17J, but came with directional bolted-on wheel covers. Under the cover was a black 5-spoke alloy wheel. The press was critical of the design, often claiming it gave the M5 the appearance of having "white-wall" tires. In 1992 BMW changed the design and a new cover was produced – the M-System II. The original intent of the M-System cover was to direct more air to the brake assembly to increase cooling. The cover actually integrated a fin assembly behind the cover. The M-System II covers, known as the "throwing stars" did not have as much capability to direct air to the brake assemblies. In late 1994, the M5 came with M Parallel wheels that did away with the cover.

All were made in 1995. It is debated as to whether or not these cars constitute a true special edition as they were ordered directly by a group of Italian BMW dealers.

Alpina B10 3.5 — with 254hp the 5-series could do 0-60 in 7.0 seconds and maximum of 157 mph (252km/h). There is only 572 of this Alpina ever produced, 5speed manual and 4speed automatic.
Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo — With the 3.5l twin turbocharged I6 Alpina produced about 360hp and launch from 0-60 in 5.1 second and official speed of 181 mph (291km/h). 507 Bi-turbo was made, the 50 last has the M60: s wider front and blue instruments. This was also the fastest 4-door saloon(sedan) to 1996, 5speed manual only.
Alpina B10 4,0 - with 315hp a tuned version of the ground model (540i) M60B40 4 litre V8, 45 Sedan cars made and only 4 Touring was made between 1993 and 1995, two transmissions 6speed manual (from 1994) and 5speed automatic.

The BMW M5 is the high-performance version of the BMW 5-Series automobile made by BMW M GmbH. M5 versions of the E28, E34, E39 and E60 5-Series have been made.

E28 M5 (1984-1987)

The first M5, based on the E28 5-Series, made its debut at the 1984 Amsterdam Motor Show. It was the product of demand for an automobile with the carrying capacity of a saloon (sedan), but the overall performance of a sports car. It utilized the 535i chassis and an evolution of the engine from the BMW M1. The M5 was handbuilt by Motorsport technicians and is the fastest production saloon (sedan) in the world.

The M5 was offered in four different versions. The first version was the Left Hand Drive (LHD) Euro Spec M5. The second version was the Right Hand Drive (RHD) Spec M5. The third version was the North American Spec (NA or so-called 1988) M5. The fourth version was the South African (ZA) Spec M5.

The LHD, RHD Euro Spec M5s and the ZA spec M5s had the M88/3 powerplant which delivered 286 hp DIN (210 kW) whereas the North American 1988 M5 was equipped with the S38 6-Cylinder engine that had a catalytic converter, which reduced the power output to 256 hp DIN (191 kW). The S38 differed from the M88/3 in that it had 9.8:1 compression versus the M88/3's 10.5:1. The S38 also used a dual-row timing chain where the M88/1 used a single-row chain. Initially 500 were to be made for the US Market, BMW later increased production to as many as 1,370 units for the US and Canadian Markets although the generally accepted figure is 1,244 units sold.

The NA Spec Models are unique in that technically there were all finished in Schwarz (Black) with Natur (Tan) interiors. The otherwise virtually identical Canadian-Spec M5s were also available with Black interiors as an option however a handful of US Models were also equipped with Black interiors.

US VINs range from 2791000-2792000 and 2875000-2875320 Car # 2791000 is not known to have been built and not all VINs are known to have been used. Car # 2791001 has been retained by BMW of North America as part of their Mobile Tradition collection.

While every NA-Spec E28 M5 was a 1988 Model Year car, production of North American specification M5s commenced in November of 1986 and ended in November of 1987. Excepting 96 units that were assembled in kit form at BMW's Plant in Rosslyn, South Africa, all E28 M5s were assembled by hand at BMW Motorsport in Garching.

With a total production of 2,191 the E28 M5 remains the rarest regular production BMW Motorsport car.

Performance

At the time of sale, BMW quoted the following (relatively poor) 0-60 times to give the impression that the E28 M5 did not outperform the more expensive, heavier and top-of-the-range E24 M635csi (BMW M6).

Tuners

Whilst BMW Motorsport did not build any special versions of the E28 M5, the German tuner Hartge produced the Hartge H35S-24, a 330 PS (325 hp/243 kW) version of the E28 M5. Main modifications over and above the standard E28 M5 were revised cams, a modified exhaust, modified Motronic ECU programming and a revised (and lowered) suspension setup.
Alpina limited their tuning efforts to the older M30 engine powered models.

The BMW X3 is a compact luxury crossover SUV (though BMW advertises it as an SAV, or Sport Activity Vehicle) produced by the German automaker BMW. It is based on the BMW 3-Series automobile platform. The X3 3.0i won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Sport Utility Vehicle award for 2005.

History and Development

Along the heels of a very successful and ongoing production run of the BMW X5, BMW decided in the early millennium that it wanted to compete with the likes of the Freelander and other small luxury SUVs just as the X5 had previously done so well in its respective classes. Thus the X3 (internally known as E83), was born.

What thus emerged was a concept unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 2003. Dubbed the xActivity, BMW previewed to the public for the first time what a smaller SAV based on a 3 Series platform would look like. The concept had no windows, for the most part no roof, and a sleek futuristic interior. Only the basic shape of the car would emerge as the BMW X3.

Just as BMW used many parts from the E39 5 Series parts bin in the making of the X5, the same occurred in the X3's development, whereby BMW engineers reused 3 series parts. In-fact complete sets of parts came straight out of the E46 330xi, emerging unscathed in the X3 (e.g. rear suspension).

Austrian automotive contractor Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria performed additional development work and has been contracted to manufacture all first-generation X3s.

Reaction

Right from the start, the BMW X3 had been criticized for its harsh ride (due to the run-flat tires, which have made all new BMWs (except those that aren't fitted with them, for example some M-models) have harsh rides), poor interior quality and off-road ability. BMW addressed the first 2 points in 2005, with a slightly softer ride and by matching plastics and carpeting in the 2005 X5s. It has also been criticized for not being built at a BMW factory. However, Magna Steyer, the factory in Austria has won numerous awards for quality and is the highest rated car assembly factory in Europe.

The automotive press however for the most part had mixed views of the X3 ranging all over the spectrum - unusual for BMW, but then again not so unusual for modern BMWs. Jeremy Clarkson even said that the X3 was for people who are clinically insane after his road test of it. He also criticized it for it's harsh ride, and showed the poor off-road ability in reality when he took one into a "not very tough" off-road trail. He got stuck multiple times, although he has admitted that he is not a very good off-road driver, but the trail didn't provide options for going from somewhere else, as it was basically a road with off-road trail obstacles in it.

The BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel drive sports car by the German automaker BMW, known as the E85 in roadster form and E86 in coupe form. Production started in 2002, and thus replaced the BMW Z3. The design addresses many criticisms of the Z3; the Z4 is larger, more powerful, and has a significantly stiffer chassis. It is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Initially, the Z4 was available only as a roadster, but in 2006 the coupé version was officially launched.

The Z4 was designed by Chris Bangle and began the controversy over his "flame surfacing" design and aggressive styling choices, which can also be seen on most modern BMW cars, most noticeably the 7 Series and 5 Series.

While the Z4's front suspension is essentially the same as the Z3's, the rear suspension is considerably different from its predecessors, which was based on that of the E30 BMW 3 Series. Instead of a semi-trailing arm suspension, the Z4 uses a more advanced multi-link suspension.

Features

Z4 M Roadster

The Z4 offers a choice of four straight-six motors: A 2.2 L, a 2.5 L, a 3.0 L, and a 3.2 L. The 2.2 L, 120 kW (170 bhp) version can reach 100 km/h in 7.7 s, but is not sold in the United States. All are variants of the BMW M54 engine. In the European market, a 2.0 L straight-4 is also offered.

The 2.5 L engine produces 141 kW (184 bhp) at 6000 rpm. BMW claims a 7.0 s time to 100 km/h (62 mph) with a manual transmission. It weighs 1,335 kg (2,932 lb) with a manual transmission—30 kg (66 lb) lighter than the 3.0 L version, but still heavier than the 2.5 L Z3's weight of 1315 kg (2899 lb).

The 3.0 L, 170 kW (231 bhp) (at 5900 rpm) straight six has a claimed time to 100 km/h (62 mph) of 5.9 s.

The 3.2 L, 246 kW (330 bhp) at 7900 rpm and (262 lb-ft) of torque at (4900 rpm)

Five-speed manual gearboxes are standard on all models except the 3.0 L and the M Roadster, which has a 6-speed Getrag. 5-speed automatic are available on all cars. The M Roadster shares its 6-speed Getrag 217 manual gearbox with the M3.

A Sport package is also available, which adds stiffer and lower suspension, larger wheels with run-flat tires, and Dynamic Driving control, BMW's Vehicle Stability Control system.

M versions

The Z4 M Roadster and the Z4 M Coupé were introduced in 2006. They feature the (In the US) 330-horsepower 3.2 L S54B32 from the E46 M3, A new six-speed manual transmission is used since the M3's six-speed didn't fit. It's the only transmission available and its final gear ratios are virtually the same as in the M3. The SMG sequential manual transmission was not offered due to its lukewarm reception from both automotive journalists and the buying public in the E46 3-Series. Some of the features available are 18-inch wheels, stability control, cross-drilled rotors from the M3 CSL, a variable M limited-slip differential, and hydraulic rack and pinion steering. 0-60 time is reported to be 4.9 seconds, with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. The European version of both cars will have the full 252kW/343bhp power due to less strict emissions requirements.

Coupé

BMW unveiled a Bangle-designed concept coupe version of the Z4 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2005. The company announced on November 22, 2005 that the coupe would be available for delivery in the US starting in June 2006, including the return of the M Coupe. The base Z4 Coupe will use an updated version of the 3.0 L straight-6 N52 engine developing 195 kW (265 PS) and 315 N·m (232 ft·lbf), while the high-end M variant will use the award-winning 3.2 L S54.

Racing

Dieter Quester, Dirk Werner, Jamie Campell-Walter and Tim Mullen won the Silverstone Britcar 24 Hour Race with a BMW Z4 M Coupé. The unit of the racing version is modified and reinforced version of the S54B32 3.2-litre engine, delivering around 294kW/400hp. The car is made by BMW's M Division and called the Z4 M Coupè Motorsport. The Z4 Coupè Motorsport version weighs 1200kg/2643lbs with a driver and has a 120 liter/30 gallon fuel tank for endurance racing. The racing kit for the Z4 M Coupé is available for € 250,000 (plus VAT) in addition to the list price of the car.

Production

Production of the BMW Z4 Coupé (both regular and M) began at the Spartanburg, South Carolina BMW plant on April 4, 2006. The cars were introduced at the New York Auto Show in April of 2006.
